Overview
The Business Development (BD) unit plays an integral role in cultivating and maintaining strategic relationships and alliances that are essential for achieving the mission of CMMB. These relationships encompass a wide range and number of development partnerships including government agencies, foundations, and corporate donors. The BD unit also provides critical leadership on business development and grant proposal management, as well as support to Country Offices and other fundraising units in the New York headquarters. The unit serves as a "hub" across practices, coordinating pipeline development, managing proposals, monitoring proposal progress, and providing strategic analysis of BD efforts.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Programs & Volunteers, the Director of Business Development provides leadership in partnership development, foundation relations, and new BD activities to support CMMB’s strategy around improving the lives of women and children. This position will work in a highly collaborative cross-team environment across departments, technical staff, and country offices. The Business Development Director will ensure grant proposals are fully compliant, efficiently supported, technically clear and accurate, and contribute to CMMB’s global strategy and program priorities. You will need to be able to effectively build and manage relationships with partner and donor agencies, and other internal and external stakeholders, including integration with our CHAMPS (Children and Mothers Partnerships) program and in support of the building of public-private partnerships. This role is expected to lead strategically and be willing to engage in operational activities.
Responsibilities
· Monitor and analyze philanthropic trends, lead CMMB’s business development gathering, oversee research needed to identify specific opportunities and to inform concept and proposal development, and cultivate strategies to pursue funding opportunities from government agencies, multilateral and bilateral institutions, foundations and corporations.
- Develop scalable partnership models, drawing from external and internal practice and learning.
- Team effectively with internal and external stakeholders to best position for success in achieving strategy.
- Lead, collaborate, and participate in the entire proposal process, including conceptualization, performing research, producing compelling content, making revisions, submission and follow-ups.
- Manage the grant proposal team for major bids.
- Engage CMMB’s Board members in cultivation and solicitation of prospects.
- Liaise with Programs Team and Country Offices to ensure efficient alignment of funding opportunities with program strategic priorities and goals, as well as program delivery strengths.
- Establish a central repository of information for use in BD.
- Lead and manage direct reports, ensuring clear goals and accountability are established and achieved. Ensure individuals’ performance and development needs are met and employees are high performing and engaged. Produce systematic performance indicator reporting to inform management as to progress, roadblocks, and other relevant performance details.

You have 10+ years of work experience in business development and grant proposal writing and demonstrated substantial success in fundraising from corporations and philanthropic foundations. Your breadth and depth of experience demonstrates your ability to perform the array of responsibilities outlined above.
You have a master’s degree or equivalent experience in a development-related subject.
You have a well-developed knowledge of private sector (foundation and corporate) approaches to international NGO partnerships, with a demonstrable understanding of the particular issues affecting the field.
You have experience of working to, and meeting, ambitious revenue goals and other performance indicators, as well as participating in financial projections, reporting, and scenario planning.
You have superior written and oral communication and presentation skills, to include: experience speaking to and writing for donors and program staff about program design and implementation in a manner that indicates deep understanding and grasp of nuance and crafting compelling funding proposals and pitch materials.
You have a keen understanding of the necessary support processes required to deliver effective private sector relationships. You can translate an organization’s strategy and objectives into operational delivery and, at times, respond quickly to changes in short-term priorities.
Your business development experience has included pre-solicitation research and partnership formation; design, development and submission of complete and competitive proposal packages; and submission follow-up to ensure lessons learnt are carried forward to future submissions.
You have direct experience remotely supporting proposal development teams and have demonstrated abilities to undertake the analyses needed to highlight where CMMB has a comparative advantage in business opportunities and lead our subsequent response in a systematic way while thinking creatively in consortium formation and proposal design.
You have a knack for building and maintaining productive working relationships with a wide network of partners and stakeholders, and have experience working in a headquarters-based setting and collaborating closely with country offices.
